Y’all, THEY’RE BACK! And even though this was SNSD’s first release from their newest album, I think it’s safe to dub “Dancing Queen” the Lesser Single, as I Got a Boy was released about a week later and dazzled/confused everybody into a stupor. The “Dancing Queen” music video, however, can stand on its own merits, which include an ambiguous song title, a cat dance, and a failing diner.
And WHY does this song sound so familiar? …It’s almost like it sounds the exact same as this other song I’ve heard, I feel like. OH WAIT I REMEMBER NOW.
The song’s name has been changed to “Dancing Queen”, which makes me suspect that there have been drastic edits made to the content of the lyrics. (Call it my killer intuition.) However, besides the change in language, the song is exactly like the English version so I won’t touch on it too much. (Hint: I don’t like the original.) Also, apparently it was supposed to be released in 2008 but was instead usurped by the inescapable smash “Gee”, which I can promise you you are singing in your head at this very moment. I think that was a pretty good choice on SM’s part.
What I can touch on, however, is the state of this video. The girls are back in traditional assorted pants fashion, in myriad colors. And I mean it. They have jeans in a LOT of different colors.
SO MANY COLORS. Also where are all the chairs in this diner?
The long awaited return of Girls’ Generation has finally arrived with the release of ‘Dancing Queen‘ and ‘I Got a Boy’! There’s nothing quite like some SNSD to kick off the new year, and take my word for it, 2013 has been kicked hard. ‘I Got a Boy’ has generated a lot of attention, and a good amount of it hasn’t exactly been positive. But in my humble, expert opinion, I say ‘I Got a Boy’ is one of SNSD’s best songs to date. As GG would say, let me break it down for you.
2012 has been a great year for k-pop. There were some strong comebacks from old favorites (i.e. ‘Sexy Free and Single‘ and ‘Fantastic Baby‘), and an even stronger amount of hit singles from fresh-faced rookie groups (most notably ‘Warrior‘ and ‘MAMA‘) that are sure to become k-pop classics. But like always, because of either timing, marketing, or just plain bad luck, some songs will inevitably get lost in the shuffle and won’t receive the recognition they truly deserve.
I have been waiting for this music video to come out for forever, since SM has been shamelessly promoting this song live at concerts and just teasing us with poor quality fan cams, and I have to say I have mixed feelings about this comeback. I don’t particularly like the song (although to be honest, it’ll probably grow on me with a couple more listens) and the music video is far from original, but there are just so many things in this music video that I just found incredibly…amusing. And I’m not sure that’s a good thing.
