Hotpot: April 19th 2013

Introducing….THE HOTPOT SERIES!!

Since life has gotten busier and I haven’t been able to post nearly as much as I would like, I have decided to start posting my current playlist of favorite trending k-pop songs, because well, since they’re songs that I like they all deserve to be mentioned on this blog (but unfortunately, we just don’t have the time to review all of them!).  Moreover, not every great k-pop song has a music video that’s worth talking about, so some of those might find their heyday here as well.  Hotpots will be posted every now and then, as waves of comebacks and debuts find their way to the stage and battle for my heart.  Of course, any and all songs listed may still get reviewed..just know that if they’re by me they’ll most likely be absolutely glowing.

Without further ado, here are the newest k-pop songs that have made it onto my top favorites k-pop playlist!

Comeback: INFINITE’S “Man In Love”

Infinite has been getting a lot of attention on this blog, what with the recent endeavors of Sungkyu’s solo work and the debut of Infinite H, and there’s no denying that they’re one of the top groups out there at the moment (or is that my bias speaking?).  BUT “Man in Love” displays a completely different side to Infinite than any of their most popular singles; a side that calls upon every ounce of their aegyo acting ability.  Can “Man in Love” live up to our high expectations?

First Impressions: Infinite H’s “Without You” ft. Zion.T

Infinite splinter group Infinite H gives you their second single off their debut album, “Without You”! (Also spelled “Without U”, also spelled “w/o u”.)

While Infinite is actually a pretty popular group in Korea right now, I have been far from one of their staunch supporters. However, with the case of Infinite H, I am all in. It’s like they culled out everything I didn’t like, completely changed their sound to something appealing, and are suddenly entertaining to me! Interestingly enough, I also enjoyed Kim Sung Kyu’s 60sec, so it seems like I like most of the individual pieces of Infinite. For whatever reason, when the group is together they all blend into some kind of dull Asian boy hybrid that has zero appeal to me. But “Without You” is a whoooooooole ‘nother story.

First Impressions: Infinite H’s “Special Girl’

Wow Infinite is just ON FIRE these days and really establishing themselves as some of the most popular boys in the entire k-pop industry.  After winning the triple crown of music shows last year with their biggest hit so far “The Chaser“, Sung Kyu (the leader of Infinite) came out with his highly praised solo debut “60 Seconds“.  And now–NOW we have the highly anticipated debut of yet another Infinite sub group: Infinite H, which is composed of Hoya and Dongwoo, two extremely talented members best known for their dancing and rapping skillz.

BUT if this debut shows us anything, it’s that Hoya and Dongwoo have much more to offer the giddy fan-girl within you (guys, you know you have one too).  These boys can dance, rap, sing, and look hella good all the while doing it.  I believe the term ‘triple threat’ has been used to describe Hoya and Dongwoo now on more than one occasion.  Seriously Woolim Entertainment, while the concept of twins is intriguingly compelling, there was probably no need to debut “Tasty” last year when you had these two in your back pocket.

Year in Review: Top 11 Most Underrated Songs of 2012

2012 has been a great year for k-pop.  There were some strong comebacks from old favorites (i.e. ‘Sexy Free and Single‘ and ‘Fantastic Baby‘), and an even stronger amount of hit singles from fresh-faced rookie groups (most notably ‘Warrior‘ and ‘MAMA‘) that are sure to become k-pop classics.  But like always, because of either timing, marketing, or just plain bad luck, some songs will inevitably get lost in the shuffle and won’t receive the recognition they truly deserve.

First Impressions: Kim Sung Kyu’s “60sec”

I.  have.  SO many feels about this music video.  First, YAY Sung Kyu is breaking into a solo career (fyi he’s the leader of Infinite)!  But let’s get down to the REALLY important thin–OH MY GOD L IS SO CUTE IN THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m sorry for the excessive fan-girling, but I haven’t had a good dose of Infinite in quite a long time now, and this is a side of Infinite I haven’t been exposed to nearly enough.  While I’m sad there’s none of the amazing dancing that got me to fall in love with Infinite in the first place, I’m SO EXCITED to see a naturally sensitive side shining through in this music video!  And I emphasize natural because that hasn’t always been their strong suit:

This whole video was….disturbing.
